February 2022

The month begins with one of the more whimsical ways to while away the Yankee winter… Groundhog Day! Will it be an early spring or 6 more weeks of winter? Not sure, but someone should tell the groundhog that there is very seldom any spring on Cape Cod!

President’s Day arrives mid-month and with it, February school vacation. Will it be sun, or ski? Some families head north to the slopes, and others south to Disneyworld. Others stay home and shovel snow!

Love is in the air! Valentine’s Day on the 14th brings back memories of our first forays into love by way of those first grade valentines we sent. New England based Necco (New England Confectionery Company) was one of the original manufacturers of those hard little “conversation hearts,” candies that offered succinct wisdom for the occasion such as, “Be Mine.” Enjoyed by all, they are a particular favorite for dentists.

February 1978 – hard to believe it was 44 years ago – “The Blizzard of 78” shut down just about the whole state for over a week. Truth be told, we’ve had storms equal to or greater than that year as far as snow totals,(the winter of 2015 comes to mind) but 1978 remains the standard by which all snowstorms are measured!

So how many days does February have? 28 or 29? Yes, it’s confusing. Here’s how it works. February, always the shortest month, has 28 days in a regular year, and 29 days in a leap year. A leap year occurs just about every 4 years, adding a single day to our numeric calendar to keep it synchronized with the earth’s astronomical calendar.
