The holiday season on Cape Cod is alive with celebration. In Osterville, the village is festooned with a thousands of sparkling white lights, serving as backdrop to the village’s annual Christmas stroll. Local shopping malls are bumper to bumper with cars as Mom and Dad shop for presents.

Will there be snow for the holidays? Hate to be a pessimist, but there usually isn’t. That doesn’t mean it doesn’t happen. The still relatively warm ocean water (as compared to the air) will keep Cape Cod’s weather systems wet, rather than white, for the first part of the winter season. Eventually the cold wins out, but sometimes not before the end of December.

Remember to always shop local!

Novemberhttps://experienceosterville.ning.com/blog/november2022-11-10T18:32:54.000Z2022-11-10T18:32:54.000ZExperience Ostervillehttps://experienceosterville.ning.com/members/OstervilleLibrary

“Over the river and through the woods to grandmother’s house we go…” You know the song. It must be getting close to Thanksgiving. It is, but have you ever wondered why Grandmother didn’t live closer to town?

Before we get to Thanksgiving, let’s pause to salute our Veterans on Veteran’s Day, November 11th. In Osterville, an annual Veteran’s Day walk is held by the library, paying tribute to monuments and plaques erected in the village, to ensure we never forget the names inscribed upon them.

By mid-month, the Cape Cod winds have blown most of the leaves from the trees. A verse from an old traditional sailor’s sea shanty seems to paint the picture:

“Cape Cod cats ain't got no tails
Haul away, haul away
They lost them all in the northeast gales
Bound, bound away for Australia”

The song of unknown origin likely dates back to the height of the whaling industry which was headquartered on both Nantucket and in New Bedford. Ships from the Cape Cod area would frequently sail as far as Australia, taking advantage of the warm waters.

Speaking of northeast gales… tis the season for what we call a “Nor’Easter.” If you’re not familiar with the term, consider yourself lucky. A Nor’Easter is basically a powerful storm, usually a winter storm that crawls up the East Coast, finds Cape Cod, and sits and spins, sometimes for days. High winds approaching hurricane force are common, as are inches of rain, and possibly, feet of snow.

Octoberhttps://experienceosterville.ning.com/blog/october2022-09-30T16:48:00.000Z2022-09-30T16:48:00.000ZExperience Ostervillehttps://experienceosterville.ning.com/members/OstervilleLibrary

“Once upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered, weak and weary..” We’re not sure if Edgar Allan Poe ever came to Cape Cod, but we know he was born in Boston. New England is top of the list for the best places to enjoy Halloween, Cape Cod included.

With some sea captain’s Victorian homes dating back to the 1700’s, the mere mention of a creaky stair on a cold October night is bound to chill the bravest of blood!

Meanwhile, there is the mundane task of raking leaves. Kids used to get a nickel per full trash barrel packed. We’re pretty sure the rate has gone up.

Following the second week in October, the summer tourists have all but left Cape Cod. Cape natives, or “year-rounders,” as some like to be called, breathe a sigh of relief at fewer traffic jams, but also miss the excitement, and good business that the summer rush provided.

The days struggle to reach 60 by month’s end, and the nights dip into the 40’s. No frost on the pumpkin just yet, but coming soon.

Septemberhttps://experienceosterville.ning.com/blog/september2022-09-02T14:12:32.000Z2022-09-02T14:12:32.000ZExperience Ostervillehttps://experienceosterville.ning.com/members/OstervilleLibrary

Remember the first days of school when you were a kid? If you grew up on Cape Cod, or anywhere in New England, you’d be buttoned up in your jacket at 7am, as you could see your breath at the bus stop in the chill air. By 3pm, on the way home, your jacket would be tied around your waist, as beads of sweat dripped from your brow. September is a changeable month to be sure.

The beauty of September on Cape Cod is that the ocean water, which has warmed all summer, provides us a so called “second summer” of warm beautiful afternoons, while our northern neighbors in Boston have already felt the first chill.

Soon enough however, the fall air arrives and we are treated to the old familiar scent of a wood fire in the neighborhood. Local craft fairs crop up, and warm wooly sweaters are again back in vogue.

If you weren’t a fan of the hot, hazy, humid days of summer, September was made just for you. Warm, but not hot, dry days and cool nights are perfect for an extended hike in the woods, or a walk along your favorite beach

Augusthttps://experienceosterville.ning.com/blog/august2022-08-08T12:30:57.000Z2022-08-08T12:30:57.000ZExperience Ostervillehttps://experienceosterville.ning.com/members/OstervilleLibrary

There’s a reason why artists like Edward Hopper used cape Cod as a backdrop for some of their most important work. It all has to do with the light.

In August, you’ll be treated to the best sunrises and sunsets of the year. Hues of salmon, cobalt blue and aqua blend and pitch in the sky varying in intensity from iridescent to pastel. The night sky is equally breathtaking. Light pollution tends to be absorbed by the dark of the ocean, and so the sky above, weather permitting, can appear as a quilt of stars.

Kids start to get fidgety this time of year. Any parent can tell you that the first time they hear a “back to school” announcement, it qualifies as a traumatic experience. Quick, Mom. Wipe that sly smirk off Dad’s face. Back to school however is a reality, and the first to go are the college kids, around the 3rd week of the month. School age children usually don’t go back to school until just after Labor Day, the first weekend in September.

Summer gardens are full tilt now bearing fruit. If you harvested a few tomatoes in July, you’re lucky. Most will ripen in August. As for the flowers, the luxurious Cape Cod hydrangeas are still dotting the landscape in all their glory. By mid-month, Rose of Sharon blooms will emerge, one of the first harbingers of fall.

How One Osterville Family and the Barnstable Land Trust Resuscitated a Dying Treasure

On a walk or drive down East Bay Road in Osterville these days, one can’t help but notice the change in Little Parkers Pond and its surrounding banks. Bounded by a stone wall along the road, the berm dips gracefully along the newly deepened tidal salt pond’s edge and lush plantings
of native grasses, shrubs, and flowers thrive. The water, once stagnant, flows smoothly out to the sea.

But it hadn’t always been that way. For decades, the pond limped along, working its way towards the estuary below via an aging culvert behind homes on East Bay Road to the salt marsh that leads into Nantucket Sound. It was stagnant from years of sediment – built up from runoff –
and contained high levels of total phosphorous, total nitrogen, and chlorophyll, leaving its waters at a mere three-inch depth, barely capable of supporting any marine life. The surrounding berm along East Bay Road was overgrown with invasive species that choked out native plants that had lived there for centuries.

Over the past several years, however, the pond and land have been restored in a joint project between The Barnstable Land Trust, which owns the land on its west (East Bay Road) side, and the Shah Family, who own the land on its opposite bank. Its restoration was a long, complicated, and challenging process, which required navigating the requirements of local, county, state, and federal agencies; thousands of human-hourswere spent dredging the pond, fixing the causeway above it, stabilizing the culvert through which its waters flow, and restoring native species toits banks.

The history of Little Parkers Pond and its surrounding area, too, is long and complex.Part of the Centerville River estuarine system, it flowed well for generations. But its degradation began a long, long time ago, perhaps as early as 1880 when a causeway over the pond, providing access to some of the homes on East Bay Road, was established by deed. The land surrounding the pond along that west side

was privately owned for years, but in 1996 its two parcels were gifted to The Barnstable Land Trust (BLT), a non-profit land conservation, stewardship, and advocacy organization dedicated to protecting natural and cultural resources. Stewards from the trust, including the late Redmond “Red” Bansfield, after whom the property (Bansfield Meadow) is named, worked diligently to reclaim the land, spending hours attempting to prune invasive species that had taken residence over the decades. While they were able to make some progress, in order to restore the land to its natural habitat, completing the entire project would have been enormously costly.

According to Janet Milkman, executive director of the BLT, a full restoration project to return to their natural states both the land and pond proved challenging. Motivation by local agencies, as well as funding for the project, had started and stalled for years.

In the late 1990s, the town of Barnstable proposed restoring the area because of its shoaling and water-quality issues, but that process sputtered. In the early 2000s, the Massachusetts Division of Ecological Restoration elevated the potential of restoring the pond, but challenge after challenge precluded its completion. Milkman knew that BLT alone could not facilitate the project: “BLT never would have had the funds to bring the lands and ponds back; it was simply too big a job.”

And so the effort to reclaim the pond and land limped along – until a benefactor emerged.

In 2007, Jill and Niraj Shah bought the main house and three-acre property along the east side of the pond. Residents of Boston, the family has long called Osterville its “home away from home.” They knew that the pond and surrounding area had been degraded, and wanted to help. “The salt pond had been in declining health for many, many decades due to restricted tidal flow from the ocean and the storm water flow into the pond from the upland areas of Osterville center,” said Jill. “In conjunction with the BLT, we decided the project was well worth the effort to help restore the pond to its natural state, which in turn will help the overall health of the bay downstream.” And so the Shahs offered to fund the restoration.

Thus began a years-long effort between the BLT and the Shah Family to reclaim the habitat.

It included an arduous permitting process that required wading through a circuitous series
of regional, state, and federal approvals that culminated in 2019. A team of experts worked in concert to assure that each step of the process – dredging the pond and safely storing that sediment, replacing its damaged soil, repairing the culvert, removing invasive species along the banks and replacing them with native plantings

– was ecologically sound. Local engineering
experts, including Trey Ruthven of Applied Coastal Research and Engineering in Mashpee, and John O’Day of Osterville’s own Sullivan Engineering and Consulting, provided engineering support. Seth Wilkinson and Ben Wollman of the Orleans- based Wilkinson Ecological Design crafted and implemented

an intricate plan to restore native plantings appropriate to each level of water and soil elevation. Pam Neubert, director of Marine Science at AECOM Environment in Woods Hole, provided scientific guidance. Many, more hands facilitated implementation.

Now that the work has been completed, Mother Nature is doing her part. Native species are back in place and thriving. The tidal waters have increased exponentially. Milkman says that in a few more years this flow is expected to match the downstream tidal height, which ranges between two to three feet. She is delighted with the process, noting “We have a salt pond back on its way to health, whereas it really was a mud puddle for a very long time.”

The Shah Family, too, is honored to have been able to help facilitate the project and is pleased with the result. According to Jill: “We are hopeful this restoration project will provide a healthier environment for the species living there for many decades to come, and might inspire others to take on similar projects to help the environment.”

Once upon a time in Osterville – the 90s to be exact – there was a band
of skateboarding, music and film making, creative, artistic, and only slightly naughty teenagers. They bonded through their mutual passions, becoming lifelong friends. (My son Neil was one of them.) Since their base of operations was the childhood homes on Osterville’s Parker Road of two of its members, they were dubbed by one of their moms as the Parker Road Gang.

They were obsessed with alt-rock and punk bands like Jesus Lizard, Shellac, the Melvins. They created their own movies, music, and art together just for fun. And they never stopped supporting, promoting, and celebrating each other’s achievements. Three of this band of wildly talented brothers are visual artists who have found national and international success.

Their styles and mediums are diverse; but the roots of their edgy, creative work reach back to their time together in the Parker Road neighborhood of Osterville.

Scott Buoncristiano, Illustrator

Buoncristiano is a freelance illustrator and comic book artist. His clients include Warner Brothers, Sony, Columbia Pictures, Focus Features, Hasbro, Simon & Schuster, Boom Studios, and Image Comics. His illustrations appear in multiple Harry Potter books, and dozens of beer labels from various breweries. He has also created tour posters for bands like Mastodon and the Melvins. His work has been exhibited in galleries in New York and Los Angeles. He’s co-creator and artist of the original graphic novel The Dark Room from Image Comics. Scott lives and works in Centerville.

Scott says he brings those early Parker Road influences to his work. “In music and skateboarding and all that we were into back then, there seemed to be a lot of eye-catching designs that had a ‘cool factor’ to them. Skulls, bright and crazy color palettes, bizarre/surreal album artwork, strange character designs,” Scott explains. “When I’m designing or finishing a piece now, the thought that’s always in the back of my head is ‘Do I think this is cool? Would the (Parker Road) guys think this is cool? Would a crazy

group of high school kids think this is cool?’ That’s all kind of my barometer on if I’m going in the right direction or not.”

Scott’s artistic career really took off in 2016, at, as he describes, “the tender young age of 38.” He explains, “I had been taking small illustration jobs on the side here and there for a couple of years before that, but in 2016 the job offers became frequent enough that I made the leap of faith and went freelance full time.”

Today, he’s a busy and sought-after illustrator. The Dark Room, a graphic novel that he has been work- ing on for the past few years, is a particular source of pride. “It was an immense workload,” he explains.

“Sequential storytelling is easily the most
challenging area of illustration I’ve ever
worked in. I collaborated with a wonderful
writer/co-creator who really allowed me to
play to my strengths while learning on the job,
and I’m extremely proud of what we did.” His
collaborator was veteran comic book writer
Gerry Duggan, who has written hits such as
Deadpool, Guardians of the Galaxy, and Savage
Avengers; he is the current writer of X-Men for
Marvel comics. “I hope to do more work related
to the comic book industry because that’s really
what I like doing,” Scott adds. The Dark Room
will be available in June. It can be pre-ordered at your local comic book shop or independent bookstore or via Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Books-a- Million, and Indigo.

Richard Colman, Contemporary Fine Artist

Richard Colman paints vivid, hard-edged figurative canvases that combine biomorphic and floral shapes with graphic geometries. These pieces oscillate between abstract compositions and recognizable domestic scenes. They often embrace sexual imagery and themes of life, death, human interaction, and isolation. Women, animals, floating heads, and overlapping bodies are common motifs.

Colman also produces sculpture and installation works incorporating a variety of media, including paper, wood, porcelain, plaster, glue, nails, and tape – typically using vibrant colors. His installations have taken the form of elaborate, psychedelic floor designs and theatrical stages constructed within the gallery. Colman has exhibited in New York, Los Angeles, Berlin, Copenhagen, Mexico City, London, and Paris. Richard currently lives and works in San Francisco and on a farm converted to a large-scale studio in rural Connecticut.

ichard, like Scott, credits his early days as part of the Parker Road gang for putting him on the path to his current success. “When I think of what has been most influential to my life as an artist, I always return to this core group of friends,” he says. “I think about us as kids, sitting around one of our kitchen tables drawing or making videos or music and I think about being in awe of each and every one of them.” He adds, “I always wanted to be as creative as they were and as funny and smart as they were. They are all still a constant source of inspiration. I feel so lucky to have been around such immensely talented and funny people.”

When did Richard know his future as a full-time artist was more than a dream? “I didn’t know until it started happening. I had gone to art school thinking of it more as vocational training,” he explains. “I thought I could become a better draftsman and maybe be a graphic designer or illustrator. But in school I was immersed in a world of very creative people making amazing things – and exposed to things I had never seen or considered before.”

These influences changed his thinking and inspired him to pursue his passion for creating art for art’s sake. “It was very exciting,” he recalls. “Coincidentally, friends of mine were starting to put together little art shows in bars and small galleries. I was asked to contribute to some of those and it has just kept going from there.”

The challenge of creating never gets easy for Richard. But there’s nothing he’d rather be doing. “No painting or sculpture or any of it is ever 100 percent successful,” he muses. “But within each work or project there are moments that I feel are successful, and those moments are what push me into the next works. I am already thinking of the next things I want to make and how I can expand on what I am currently making. So, I’m just looking forward to making, and being able to keep moving forward.”

Dan McCarthy, Screen Print Artist

Dan McCarthy is an artist based in Massachusetts who works predominantly in the medium of screen printing, pen and ink illustration and mixed media painting. He studied drawing and printmaking at the School of the Museum of Fine Art in Boston, Massachusetts and graduated in 1999 with a focus

in screen printing. He has had solo shows in Los Angeles, San Francisco, and New York. McCarthy’s artwork often focuses on quiet landscapes with a subtle narrative, and the cyclical nature between life and death. He lives and works in Falmouth.

Dan credits his family for his earliest interest in art. “Drawing and making art for me started when I was really young,” he says. “The home I grew up in was a very creative environment where both my parents embraced and encouraged any form of creativity. My older brother, sister and I were always drawing, painting, and learning how to play instruments.”

Skateboarding in the mid 80’s, following in his older brother’s footsteps, was another turning point in his creative journey. “I credit skateboarding with opening up my mind to a whole new world of music and art,” he says. “When you become a skate rat, you aren’t just rolling around the streets. You become part of a club that has its own form of music and art. I loved the skateboard graphics of the 80’s and they definitely inspired me and sparked my interest in screen printing.”

The Parker Road gang evolved as Dan and others found each other over the years through their mutual passions. “By the time we were all teenagers, we were all fully involved in making music and art,” he reminisces. “We didn’t really think about why or what kind of career it could lead to, we just loved being creative.”

It was later that Dan realized he could make a living doing what he loved. “When I graduated art school in 1999, I was living in Boston, playing
in bands, and started making screen printed posters for shows we were playing,” he reminisces. “Around that time, the internet was starting to become a part of everyone’s daily life. There was a website, gigposters.com. It was a giant interna- tional collection of artists who would post their work to share with the world.”

This early art site became Dan’s inspiration for his own business. “That was a starting point for me and getting my art out in the world. Eventually, it led to me getting commission work for other bands, and I started making
a little money. Around 2004, I thought it would be a fun challenge to design and print one art print per month for one year, and offer an annual subscription service to my collectors,” he explains. The Dan McCarthy Print Club was born. “It started with just a few subscribers, but having their support, really pushed me to get the work done,” he says. “It grew year after year and eventually became my full-time job. It’s crazy to think that I’ve been doing it for almost 18 years!”

Along the way, there have also been exciting and reward- ing commissions. “I think my favorite project has to be the poster I made for Star Wars from 2010,” he recalls. “It was for a company called Mondo. They were one of the first to curate and sell officially licensed movie posters. When they asked me to do it, my mind exploded. Star Wars was huge for me as a kid (and now) and I was really excited to do it.” That led to other major poster projects. “I also made E.T. and Jurassic Park posters,” he adds.

What’s next for Dan? “For 2022, I am excited to switch

things up a bit and focus some time on creating a graphic novel,” he muses. “I’ve been working on this idea for a few years and it’s going to be a new challenge, but I’m looking forward to getting it done.”

What’s the most rewarding thing about being an independent artist? “Just being able to live my life doing something I love to do,” he comments. “I have 3 kids and it makes me happy to think that they see me working and know that it’s possible to make a career out of something you love.”

Dan concurs. “That time in my life is something I always think about, and it definitely keeps me motivated and inspired.”

Richard agrees. “Osterville and my friends from the Cape ground me. I have spent most of my life moving around and living in other places and when I think of Osterville and this special group of people, I think of home and family,” he says. “I know that no matter what happens, I will always have these people in my life.
t is a proud occasion as we welcome you to the 10th edition of Experience Osterville, a publication that has passed the test of time, and made its mark as an integral part of our lives in the village.

In addition to providing the community with a calendar of current events, quick access to service providers, and suggested sites to visit in all four seasons, Experience Osterville serves to preserve our heritage with articles

about Osterville’s rich history.

Experience Osterville is but one of the very many benefits and blessings bestowed on our community by the Osterville Village Library. I am proud to be the President of Trustees for an institution that consistently goes beyond its mission to engage, enhance and improve the community it serves.

The Osterville Village Library has recently been recognized with several prestigious awards. Please join me in congratulating Executive Director Cyndy Cotton and her staff for their efforts on behalf of the Board, the library’s patrons, advertisers and community partners on receiving the following:

”TheRedCrossofSoutheasternMassachusettsCommunityLeadership Award.” Entering its third year now, the library has collaborated with the Red Cross to hold blood drives which have proved all the more essential during the pandemic. In 2021 alone, an astounding 32 blood drives were held at the library, collecting 712 pints of blood, benefitting 2,136 patients on Cape Cod.

A“CitationforOutstandingContributionstoCommunity”issued by the Massachusetts House of Representatives. When a state-mandated pandemic shutdown was lifted in June of 2020, the Osterville Village Library was one of only a few libraries in the state to re-open its doors.

“TheInstituteforNon-ProfitPractice2021ChangemakerAward” INP’s Changemaker Award recognizes those who have been on the front lines in support of their community demonstrating extraordinary commitment in the face of adversity borne by the effects of the pandemic.

While these accolades are impressive, please know that they would not be possible without the support of our advertisers, donors and volunteers. Your investment in the Osterville Village Library is an investment in your community.

Permit me a parting thought toward what the future might hold. I can tell you that with the first part of 2022 already underway, the incredible commitment and creativity exhibited by Cyndy and her staff have already set their sights on new heights. You’ll be amazed at what we have in store.

It doesn’t get much better than May on Cape Cod, unless its June! The deciduous tree leaf canopy (primarily oaks and maples) fills out by mid-month, usually right after Mother’s Day. Don’t forget Mom!

The pansies and peas of early spring can now be joined by geraniums, marigolds and all the other usual suspects of summer. For vegetable gardeners, the old standby rule is not to plant your tomatoes or peppers until after Memorial Day. While a frost at any point in May is rare, the nights are still a tad too cool to promote growth. So, while your plants might not perish, nor will they thrive. When the nighttime lows no longer drop below 55, your vegetables will start to show progress!

In the mood for a dip? If you’re brave you might try a south side Cape beach, but even there, water temperatures will be hard pressed to surpass 60. If you want to turn blue, it’s entirely up to you. If we have a good stretch of 80-degree sunshine in June, you’ll have no problem by the 4th of July.

At month’s end we remember those who fought, and gave their lives for this country. Memorial Day honors not only lives lost in service to the USA, but the ideals and principles of freedom for which they fought.

April on Cape Codhttps://experienceosterville.ning.com/blog/april-on-cape-cod2022-04-05T23:12:58.000Z2022-04-05T23:12:58.000ZExperience Ostervillehttps://experienceosterville.ning.com/members/OstervilleLibrary

If spring is supposed to arrive in March, April is when it finally gets here. Usually. Cross your fingers. It’s a glorious month by most accounts with bright yellow sprays of Forsythia appearing every year to usher in the new season. Maple trees will be among the first to leaf out by month’s end, and if you’re an allergy sufferer, you’ll be well aware!

Are you a baseball fan? The first crack of the bat can be heard at Fenway Park as diehard fans shiver in the stands until May.

And, whether you celebrate Easter or Passover, you’re probably already aware the date for each holiday differs year to year. Why is that? Passover is held on the full moon of the seventh month of the Jewish calendar which begins its new year in late September or October.

Easter’s annual date is also determined by astronomy. Easter Sunday is always the first Sunday following the first full moon, which arrives after the vernal equinox.

March, in like a lion, out like a lamb... hopefullyhttps://experienceosterville.ning.com/blog/march-in-like-a-lion-out-like-a-lamb-hopefully2022-03-08T15:01:31.000Z2022-03-08T15:01:31.000ZExperience Ostervillehttps://experienceosterville.ning.com/members/OstervilleLibrary

“In like a lion, out like a lamb”… You’ve heard the saying. Cape Codders take it to mean that if we have cold windy winter weather at the beginning of the month, we’re sure to have a stretch of spring like warmth near its end. While the origin of the proverb is uncertain, this poem attributed to Lorie Hill sums up its message quite nicely!

March roars in like a lion
So fierce,
The wind so cold,
It seems to pierce.

The month rolls on
And Spring draws near,
And March goes out
Like a lamb so dear.

Spring arrives with the vernal equinox on either the 20th or the 21st depending on the year. Regardless of the date upon which it falls, it means that the sun is precisely above the equator, and day and night are of equal length.

We almost forgot! What are you doing on the 17th? Wearing a touch of the green in celebration of St Patrick’s Day! Anyone can eat green bagels or drink green beer, but how about we learn a few phrases from the old country? “Slainte,” pronounced “slant – cha” in English, basically means “To your health,” a perfect toast as glasses are raised. This next one is a little harder. “Cead Mile Failte” is pronounced like this in English: “kayd meela falcha” What does it mean? “A hundred thousand welcomes!”

February 2022https://experienceosterville.ning.com/blog/february-20222022-02-19T22:15:54.000Z2022-02-19T22:15:54.000ZExperience Ostervillehttps://experienceosterville.ning.com/members/OstervilleLibrary

The month begins with one of the more whimsical ways to while away the Yankee winter… Groundhog Day! Will it be an early spring or 6 more weeks of winter? Not sure, but someone should tell the groundhog that there is very seldom any spring on Cape Cod!

President’s Day arrives mid-month and with it, February school vacation. Will it be sun, or ski? Some families head north to the slopes, and others south to Disneyworld. Others stay home and shovel snow!

Love is in the air! Valentine’s Day on the 14th brings back memories of our first forays into love by way of those first grade valentines we sent. New England based Necco (New England Confectionery Company) was one of the original manufacturers of those hard little “conversation hearts,” candies that offered succinct wisdom for the occasion such as, “Be Mine.” Enjoyed by all, they are a particular favorite for dentists.

February 1978 – hard to believe it was 44 years ago – “The Blizzard of 78” shut down just about the whole state for over a week. Truth be told, we’ve had storms equal to or greater than that year as far as snow totals,(the winter of 2015 comes to mind) but 1978 remains the standard by which all snowstorms are measured!

So how many days does February have? 28 or 29? Yes, it’s confusing. Here’s how it works. February, always the shortest month, has 28 days in a regular year, and 29 days in a leap year. A leap year occurs just about every 4 years, adding a single day to our numeric calendar to keep it synchronized with the earth’s astronomical calendar.

Auld Lang Synehttps://experienceosterville.ning.com/blog/auld-lang-syne2021-12-31T16:19:06.000Z2021-12-31T16:19:06.000ZExperience Ostervillehttps://experienceosterville.ning.com/members/OstervilleLibrary

You hear the plaintive wail every New Year’s Eve… a song that lends itself to poor horn playing and inebriated off key virtuoso singers. Sometimes the melancholy melody even prompts a tear or two, despite the fact most of us have no idea what the words mean.

What exactly is “Auld Lang Syne?” Sounds like a horrific disease of the tongue. Perhaps it’s a type of antimicrobial bread mold, or better yet, a process by which monoclonal antibodies are isolated to combat the latest surge of Covid. None of the above.

Roughly translated from the Scots language circa 17 hundred something, it means “Old Long Since.” Like this: “Should old acquaintance be forgot and never brought to mind, bla bla bla my dear, in days of old long since. Doesn’t quite have the same ring. Famed poet Robert Burns, who perhaps you’ve heard of, translated the sentiment from a folk song which seems to date back as far as the 1500’s.

Okay, so what does it mean again? What the hell is “old long since?” Basically, the good old days. It’s a remember when kind of thing. Don’t even try to share this with your millennial grandchildren, as they are adamant that nothing of interest existed before mobile technology. If you really want to watch them squirm, make them watch Guy Lombardo re-runs in black and white. Forgive me, I digress.

Back to Auld Lang Syne. What’s confusing is that there is no recognizable interrogative inflection in the opening line, which in essence, asks, “Should we remember the old times despite these damn tears in our eyes, or let them fade and be forgotten?”

What do you think? Here’s food for thought. You remember your multiplication tables without much emotional fanfare, although I always seemed to like the fact that 7x7 equals 49. What about memories of Christmas morn as a child? Hmm. The memory is at once shrouded in, and catalyzed by emotion. Auditory memories such as “I’ll Be Home for Christmas” can render even an emotionally frozen stoic misty eyed. The scent of Balsam Fir? That’s a round trip ticket back to the year of your choosing onboard the olfactory express

The point is, and I believe those moaning horns on New Year’s Eve are well aware of this… you have no choice. Old acquaintances, whether they be lovers, friends, or places, cannot be forgotten. The photos in our mind may no longer be high resolution, perhaps frayed at the edges, but they remain. We are, among other things, a sum of our experiences. If you’re able to suspend disbelief for even a moment, you’ll see that they exist in us even now. Cherish your memories, though painful some may be.

As the song suggests,

“For auld lang syne, my dear,
for auld lang syne,
we'll take a cup of kindness yet,
for auld lang syne”

Happy New Year!

Power outage in Osterville - October 2021https://experienceosterville.ning.com/blog/power-outage-in-osterville-october-20212021-11-17T16:16:06.000Z2021-11-17T16:16:06.000ZExperience Ostervillehttps://experienceosterville.ning.com/members/OstervilleLibrary

It wasn’t your imagination. It was a bad storm. Wind gusts on the outer Cape in excess of 80mph, with frequent 60mph gusts in and around Osterville. With the leaves still on the trees, and 2 – 4 inches of rain it’s no wonder over half a million people in Massachusetts lost power, most of them on the Cape.

The Osterville Village Library was one of only a handful of libraries to open in the aftermath of the storm thanks to a generator, which supplies power to the entire building. Patrons were able to come in to enjoy the warmth, a cup of coffee, and charge their mobile devices before heading home. Having power however doesn’t necessarily ensure WiFi, or internet connectivity, neither of which the library was able to provide due to downed lines in the area. Whereas many people come to the library to use the computers, they were faced with a seldom-encountered situation in modern times… What to do?

You could of course read a book. They still exist. Hard bound volumes of printed pages that tell fascinating stories. Instead of watching someone else’s vision of a character on screen, your mind fills in the descriptive blanks to your own satisfaction. The faces and landscapes in the tale come alive in your mind, uniquely yours, and yours alone.

There are 38,000 books on 3 floors inside the Osterville Village Library. Due to the internet outage, the age-old tradition of perusing library shelves for appealing titles enjoyed a renaissance. Patrons who normally use the library to access the internet, or email, found themselves wandering around the building discovering surprises around every corner. Featured authors on display caught their eye, as well as an extensive selection of biographies which piqued curiosity,

One library staff member remarks, “It was interesting to see, some of our regular computer users were browsing the racks, reading the first few pages of novels. It was as if they had discovered a forgotten world.” While the library’s regular circulation numbers in regard to books are quite impressive year round, it was the renaissance of good old fashioned shelf browsing that was witnessed as a welcome phenomenon. “Usually people request a book, or pick up a best seller, their choices by and large driven by research they’ve initialized on the internet,” the OVL staff member explains. “What we saw in the aftermath of the storm, was people browsing the racks, cracking open a book based on an appealing title, and making a spot decision to check it out, the way libraries used to be.”

What’s more, with computer technology inoperative, the staff checked out the books the old-fashioned way, with a careful record kept by pad and pencil. “Nothing against technology, not at all,” another staff member says, “but it was nice to see our collection of books stand on their own appeal, and if I’m not mistaken, people actually seemed to enjoy the experience, it brought them back to a simpler time.”

The way Osterville Village Library Executive Director Cyndy Cotton sees it, offering shelter from the storm is part of the library’s role in the community. “I don’t have power, and neither do a lot of people in the village. Your cell phone battery only lasts so long. People need to stay charged up to let relatives and friends know they’re ok, or to call a contractor to fix damage.”

“It gets dreary sitting around the house with no power and even though it’s not winter, it was starting to get cold,” says one library patron who expressed his appreciation for a place to go. “The library is warm, has bright lights, and as neighbors we all enjoy swapping stories about the storm. I’m really glad they’re open.”

As utility crews work to restore power and internet, and tree crews labor to clean up the mess, the inconvenience from our October nor’easter will surely pass. It’s also likely most will fall back in step with their modern habits and computer screens will once again cast their glow. But perhaps, the lost art of old fashioned discovery will have found its way back into a few hearts and minds.

Osterville Village Library Traffic Reporthttps://experienceosterville.ning.com/blog/osterville-village-library-traffic-report2021-07-14T18:06:09.000Z2021-07-14T18:06:09.000ZExperience Ostervillehttps://experienceosterville.ning.com/members/OstervilleLibrary

Summer 2021 - OVL Remembering Fun July 14th Osterville Village Library Reports Busiest Days Ever!
