From there, we’ll parade through the heart of town, showcasing spooky, funny, and creative costumes, and finish up at the Osterville Village Library for sweet treats provided by the Rotary Club of Osterville-Mashpee. After all, no Halloween is complete without a little candy!

But the fun doesn’t stop there! Bring your already-carved pumpkins to Pocket Full of Posies or Fete Among the Flowers and display your creative handiwork. Everyone attending will get to vote for their favorite pumpkin, with two lucky winners being announced at 5:30 PM! What’s at stake? A fabulous, festive gift basket filled with treasures from Fete Among the Flowers and Pocket Full of Posies. The holiday season on Cape Cod is alive with celebration. In Osterville, the village is festooned with a thousands of sparkling white lights, serving as backdrop to the village’s annual Christmas stroll. Local shopping malls are bumper to bumper with cars as Mom and Dad shop for presents.

Will there be snow for the holidays? Hate to be a pessimist, but there usually isn’t. That doesn’t mean it doesn’t happen. The still relatively warm ocean water (as compared to the air) will keep Cape Cod’s weather systems wet, rather than white, for the first part of the winter season. Eventually the cold wins out, but sometimes not before the end of December.

Remember to always shop local!

“Over the river and through the woods to grandmother’s house we go…” You know the song. It must be getting close to Thanksgiving. It is, but have you ever wondered why Grandmother didn’t live closer to town?

Before we get to Thanksgiving, let’s pause to salute our Veterans on Veteran’s Day, November 11^th. In Osterville, an annual Veteran’s Day walk is held by the library, paying tribute to monuments and plaques erected in the village, to ensure we never forget the names inscribed upon them.

By mid-month, the Cape Cod winds have blown most of the leaves from the trees. A verse from an old traditional sailor’s sea shanty seems to paint the picture:

“Cape Cod cats ain't got no tails
Haul away, haul away
They lost them all in the northeast gales
Bound, bound away for Australia”

The song of unknown origin likely dates back to the height of the whaling industry which was headquartered on both Nantucket and in New Bedford. Ships from the Cape Cod area would frequently sail as far as Australia, taking advantage of the warm waters.

Speaking of northeast gales… tis the season for what we call a “Nor’Easter.” If you’re not familiar with the term, consider yourself lucky.  A Nor’Easter is basically a powerful storm, usually a winter storm that crawls up the East Coast, finds Cape Cod, and sits and spins, sometimes for days. High winds approaching hurricane force are common, as are inches of rain, and possibly, feet of snow.

“Once upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered, weak and weary..” We’re not sure if Edgar Allan Poe ever came to Cape Cod, but we know he was born in Boston. New England is top of the list for the best places to enjoy Halloween, Cape Cod included.

With some sea captain’s Victorian homes dating back to the 1700’s, the mere mention of a creaky stair on a cold October night is bound to chill the bravest of blood!

Meanwhile, there is the mundane task of raking leaves. Kids used to get a nickel per full trash barrel packed. We’re pretty sure the rate has gone up.

Following the second week in October, the summer tourists have all but left Cape Cod. Cape natives, or “year-rounders,” as some like to be called, breathe a sigh of relief at fewer traffic jams, but also miss the excitement, and good business that the summer rush provided.

The days struggle to reach 60 by month’s end, and the nights dip into the 40’s. No frost on the pumpkin just yet, but coming soon.
